Greenpoint YMCA Announces New Executive Director

BY Greenpoint Gazette

This summer the Greenpoint YMCA welcomed Kendall Charter as its new Executive Director. Charter has worked with the YMCA for 22 years, and joins the Greenpoint Y from the Flatbush YMCA, where he served as Executive Director for four years.

As the Greenpoint Y’s new leader, Charter is working to increase the number of programs offered to children and families, expand the Y’s already renowned Early Childhood Center, and engage new residents of Greenpoint.

“My goal is to guide our actions and initiatives to support the Y’s focus on healthy living, youth development and social responsibility, and to provide quality programming and services to the communities of Greenpoint and Williamsburg,” he said. “This is a dynamic and developing neighborhood, and we will continue to evolve and grow with it.”

Charter has made a career for himself at New York City’s YMCA. He began working the front desk at the Flatbush Y in 1993 and, over the following six years, held positions in Membership and the Youth and Family departments. In 1999, Charter was named Flatbush’s Youth and Teen Coordinator and was promoted to Y After School Director later that year. Then, in 2000, he transferred to the Long Island City YMCA, where he served as Youth and Family Director for eight years. In 2008, he was named Associate Executive Director at the Prospect Park YMCA and Park Slope Armory—a position he held until assuming the head role at the Flatbush Y.

Charter earned a bachelor’s from York College in York, Pa., where he studied social work, and a MPA from Metropolitan College of New York’s Graduate School of Public Service. Additionally, he received a certificate in not-for-profit management and program development from Columbia Business School.

Charter successfully completed the YMCA of Greater New York’s Executive Leadership Institute program in 2009.
