OSA Organizes Olympic-Style Games to Raise Money for Local Parks

Registration is now open for the first ever McCarren Games, to be held in the eponymous park in October.

Organized by the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA), the event will encourage sport and physical activity in North Brooklyn, while acting as a fundraiser for the organization.

On October 11, North Brooklyn residents will compete in three different sports namely Ultimate Frisbee, Kickball, and Flag Football, with the money raised from the event to be used to advance OSA’s mission of maintaining and championing parks in the neighborhood.

“When we looked at the way parks were used in the neighborhood we realized that what’s unique to McCarren Park is the fact that you have all these sports amenities – tennis courts, basketball, skateboarding, soccer field all in close proximity of each other,” said Lauren Lawson, the Developments and Events Manager at OSA. “So we decided that an event like this would make the most sense, and based on the success of the first one we will decide to continue them in the future.”

OSA is expecting up to 200 people to sign up for the Games

Teams can comprise between 10 and 14 members, with at least 2 teammates required to be women. Up to six teams can compete in each of the three sporting categories.

Teams will then compete against each other for three titles:

– The 2015 McCarren Games World Champions–which will be the highest scoring, team per sport.

– The Most Green award – the team that is able to do the most fundraising prior to the games

– The Baller award – for the individual that raises the most amount of money for the Games.
