Once again I.S. 318 are champs!

The Title I school won this year’s United States Chess Championship, held in Louisville, Kentucky. The team traveled to Kentucky from Brooklyn to compete against the best teams from around the nation. After three grueling days of games that lasted up to four hours each, the team of 42 players emerged victorious over their rivals. The championship came down to one game between eighth grader Gabriel Rivera and a player from the Dalton School in New York. Gabriel took the championship after he checkmated his opponent in an epic game.

Meanwhile, closer to home, five students from I.S. 318 performed with The New York Pops, and guest stars Laura Benanti, Alan Cumming, Sutton Foster, Victor Garber, Queen Latifah, Rob McClure, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Bebe Neuwirth, Kelli O’Hara, Margo Seibert, James Snyder and Rachel York.

Eighth graders Troy Sheppard, Jesdelson Vasquez, Jake Oztan and Kayla Parker, along with seventh grader Philip Fletcher were five of only 15 wind and percussionists accepted throughout New York City.

The students received four group/sectional lessons, a dress rehearsal, and finally, the opportunity to perform onstage with The New York Pops at its 32nd Birthday Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall on Monday, May 4.
