Hot Sauce Expo in Greenpoint Tests The Limits of Fiery Food Lovers

BY Tanay Warerkar

Spice fiends unite this weekend at the Brooklyn Expo Center for the 3rd Annual Hot Sauce Expo – two-day event pushing the boundaries of spice tolerance.

Over fifty vendors from across the country, and one flying in all the way from New Zealand will showcase their artisanal hot sauce creations along with a series of hot sauce focused events that are sure to ignite the palates of hot sauce lovers and foodies alike.

Some of the events that will be featured at the expo during the weekend include Grimaldi’s Pizza eating contest, a spicy taco-eating contest and a burrito-eating contest.

Celebrity chef Chris Santos will be on hand to sign bottles of his newest creation – the Rattler BBQ Sauce.

The event also allows for the final showdown for the best Bloody Mary Mixes and Buffalo Style Wings – the best in the business compete in several regional rounds to make it to the finals that are conducted at the Hot Sauce Expo.

This year’s event also features a hall of fame induction ceremony. The Hot Sauce Hall of Fame Foundation was created to honor the best in the fiery foods industry and those who have been instrumental in creating awareness and increasing popularity for chili peppers throughout the world. Five companies will be inducted into the hall of fame this year.

What’s also unique to the Hot Sauce Expo is the Screaming Mi Mi Awards Show – awarding the best of hot sauces each year in categories like Jalapeno, Habanero, Fruit-Based, Pepper Blend, Louisiana-Style and half a dozen others.

But what’s a hot sauce expo without crowning the ultimate champion – the person with the highest spice tolerance. A Guinness Book of World Records Challenge will test who can eat the most number of the world’s hottest pepper – the Smokin Ed’s Carolina Reaper.

“This Hot Sauce Expo is like a Metallica concert,” said Steve Seabury, the owner of High River Sauces, and the organizer of the event. “We crank it up and let people get their burn on. People want it spicy and we deliver.”

Tickets range from $10 for general admission to $100 for a Super VIP Pass. For more information visit
