Over 800 cats and dogs will be up for adoption this weekend at the Brooklyn Expo Center on Franklin Street when the Best Friends Animal Society brings its Holiday Pet Super Adoption Event to Greenpoint.
Pet lovers will have their choices of full grown dogs and cats, as well as puppies and kittens to adopt during the three day event that kicks off on Friday, December 12.
The animals come from shelters and rescue groups located throughout the tri-state area. The event is an effort to stem the number of animal deaths in shelters across the country.
More than 9,000 pets are killed every day in shelters throughout the United States, according to the Best Friends Animal Society.
The group hopes the mega adoption event can at least partially reduce that statistic and help raise awareness about the issue.
Representatives from several well-known adoption agencies, rescue centers, and shelters will all be present at the weekend adoption event including the Give Me Shelter Project, the Sean Casey Animal Rescue, TLC Cat Rescue, and Animal Care and Control of New York City.
Those interested in adopting pets are asked to bring a valid form of identification, and a letter of reference from a landlord, if those interested are renting a home. Several groups present will allow attendees to adopt animals the very same day and others will conduct background checks before the animals can leave for a safe home.
