Greenpoint is now home to its very own version of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Green Street healing center, Maha Rose, recently launched an afterschool program, Fairy Afterschool, for kids aged four through nine, with a focus on enchanted arts and crafts such as magic wand making, meditation, tea-leaf reading, and creating herb gardens.
“It’s a way for children living in the city to connect with nature,” said Lisa Levine, one of the founders of Maha Rose. “It’s a way to introduce kids at a young age to deal with modern life. And the activities are particularly important with so many schools losing out on arts funding these days.”
Levine developed the Fairy Afterschool concept while teaching a reiki workshop in upstate New York. Levine is considering having a child and that coupled with her experiences walking through the forests in Upstate New York made her realize the need to open a program that would allow city kids to let their imaginations flourish and get closer to nature.
The program will run Mondays through Thursdays. Classes for children aged four through six will take place Mondays and Wednesdays with activities like jewelry and costume making – creating fairy wands and lessons in fairy tales.
For the older kids, ages seven through nine, Tuesdays and Thursdays will feature workshops, including tea-leaf reading, astrology, crystal healing and tarot card reading.
In addition, the afterschool program will offer dance and theater workshops.
On Sunday the center invited neighborhood families to see for themselves what the afterschool program will look like once it’s in full swing, and Levine said that the kids who attended couldn’t have been more excited to be a part of the activities.
“Kids want more than just math and science,” said Levine. “I really want them to blossom and connect with their imaginations.”
