It’s National Ice Cream month and Brooklyn is celebrating with a spectrum of unexpected frozen flavors like Avocado Chip and Carrot Habanero Pepper at Crème De La Crème: The Flea’s National Ice Cream Day Bonanza on July 19 at Fort Greene and July 20 at Williamsburg.
“We love watching the kids go crazy, eating too much ice cream, including our own,” said Eric Demby, 42, Co-Founder with Jonathan Butler of Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg.
The Flea is expecting more than 500 attendees at its third annual Ice Cream Day, which will feature nearly a dozen vendors and 50 unusual flavors to choose from.
“We have a lot of new vendors as the ice cream craze has continue to spread in New York City,” he said. “One of the hallmarks of the Flea has always been vendors, creating special items and flavors that can only be found at the markets, and Ice Cream Day is no different,” Demby said.
The event will feature more than 10 vendors including Court Street’s Blue Marble Ice Cream, Smith Street’s Butter & Scotch and Steve’s Ice Cream on Flushing Avenue.
“We love ice cream, and we love being outside and interacting with our customers,” said Allison Kave, owner of Butter and Scotch and a vendor participant.
Kave will serve two types of pie shakes made with La Newyorkina ice cream, meaning “the girl from New York.” The “S’morgasm,” combines their Mexican Vanilla ice cream with S’mores Pie and the Cherry Lime Rickey with their Lime Crema ice cream and Cherry pie.
“We are always ecstatic when the yearly ice cream invite comes our way,” Sara Goodleaf, director of marketing & communications at Steve’s Ice Cream and a vendor participant, said.
Steve’s Ice Cream will be serving its signature Dairy Flavors including BKLYN Blackout, a milk chocolate ice cream with stout cake and pudding as well as their top selling, Salty Caramel.
Goodleaf has participated in all three Ice Cream Days. She has seen an increase in attendance each year and hopes to raise her brand’s profile even higher at this weekend’s event.
“We jump at any chance we can to participate and connect with our local audience in such a great environment,” she said.
