Greenpoint Open Studios Makes a Grand Return

BY Tanay Warerkar

Greenpoint Open Studios is returning to the neighborhood after a two-year absence, with more than 100 local artists expected to participate in the weekend-long artistic extravaganza set to take place in early October.

Jen Galatioto, who runs Greenpointers, is leading the organizational efforts this year, having previously assisted on organizing the events when they were held between 2009 and 2011.

The last Open Studios were held as part of the Northside Festival in 2011. Galatioto said she felt it wasn’t the right kind of place for Open Studios, with Greenpoint artists not being able to showcase the range of their abilities having been clubbed together with a predominantly music-oriented festival held in Williamsburg.

Galatioto wanted to organize a festival that would reflect the wide diversity of visual artists living and working in Greenpoint itself.

“It is great to see just how close knit and supportive the creative community is in this neighborhood,” she said. “It’s great for the neighborhood because everyone is out there looking for art to share.”

In order to ensure the Open Studios now remains a lasting tradition like its cousin in Bushwick, Galatioto is partnering with Lia Post, who runs Fowler Arts Collective, the local shared studio space and artist gallery, and photographer Eric Lee Bowman.

“I don’t want it to be focused just on one person,” said Galatioto. “One person might not always be able to give all the time required to organizing something like this and coming together like this really sets it up for future events.”

Planning is still in the early stages, and the group is currently soliciting artists to take part in the event in October.

The event itself allows neighbors and art lovers to be a part of local artists’ process, and watch them work over a course of an entire weekend, and exposes them to their work spaces.

The organizers just finished designing fliers for the event that will be seen all over the neighborhood in the coming days.
