Lentol, Greenpoint Chamber Organize First Pop-Up Small Business Fair

BY Tanay Warerkar

For its third event this year, the Greenpoint Chamber of Commerce is working with Assemblyman Joe Lentol to support the community of small businesses in North Brooklyn.

On Thursday, May 15th, Lentol and the Chamber will bring a “pop-up” fair for small businesses to Dirck the Norseman, North 15th Street’s brewery-restaurant. At the event, representatives from various city, state, and federal agencies will be on hand to answers questions about navigating NYC’s business regulations as well as to present information about government programs that can benefit businesses.

“I think a small business resource fair is just the type of programming local business owners need,” said Lentol. “It will not only provide them with an opportunity to ask questions relevant to their operations, but it will also provide them with a direct point of contact at the various government agencies for future questions or issues.”

The fair will offer local businesses a chance to interact with various city and state agencies that can assist them in the day-to-day running of their businesses as well as provide them advice on their long-term prospects in regards to sustaining themselves in the current economy.

The round-table style event will kick off at noon with beer and snacks to be provided by Dirck the Norseman.

At 1 p.m., there will be a discussion between Lentol, Steve Cohen, the Deputy Commissioner of Small Business Services for Empire State Development, and the President of the Chamber, Jeff Mann.

Some of the agencies present at Thursday’s fair will include The State Liquor Authority (SLA), the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the city’s Economic Development Corporation, the Department of Sanitation, NYPD, FDNY and several others.

Over 100 local business owners are expected to attend the event.

“It’s a great opportunity to match the needs of the local business community with the resources of the city and state,” said Mann. “Every day small business owners approach me for advice on navigating the system and I’m grateful to have the support of Joe Lentol who lined up so many representatives from the various agencies.”

The fair comes on the heels of a rash of small business being been forced to shut down, including Jam’s Stationery, Photoplay, Dalaga, and most recently, Chopin Chemists.
