Pushing the boundaries of cultural innovation, the Northside Festival is taking it one step further this year, creating a dedicated space for pop up stores as part of its weeklong festivities in June.
A 400-square-foot space in McCarren Park will be home to the Pop Up Shop Village for the first four days of the festival.
The space is a collaboration between the Northside Festival, Shopify, the e-commerce website, and Storefront, an online marketplace that helps merchants find and rent retail spaces.
The latter organization is now inviting merchants and vendors to apply for the six booths that will be available as part of the Village space.
“With our recent expansion into LA and continued growth in three major US markets, we remain committed to providing brands, designers and artists the opportunity to showcase their products and create unique experiences for shoppers,” said Erik Eliason, CEO and founder of Storefront. “Our passion for helping makers is synonymous with that of Northside Festival’s, and we can’t wait to see the innovation and energy that brands will bring to this year’s event.”
Storefront launched just over a year ago, and since its inception has already helped over 1,000 merchants find retail spaces in San Francisco and New York. Merchants who have used the service were able to generate over $5 million in sales just last month.
For the Northside Festival, organized by the people behind Brooklyn Magazine, the Pop Up Shop Village, is yet another addition to its growing influence in North Brooklyn. In the five years since its launch, the Festival has consistently attracted tens of thousands of attendees each year. In 2014, the Festival will take over 50 venues in North Brooklyn showcasing the series of films, musicians, and artists on the roster.
“New York City has become the world’s next great center of entrepreneurship, creation and innovation,” said Dana Keither, the director of Northside Business Development. “It’s a community that’s young, hungry and incredibly influential. The Northside Festival is the annual event that showcases the best of this community as it continues to grow and revolutionize society. We’re thrilled to add the Pop Up Village to this year’s festivities!”
