Next Wednesday marks EWVIDCO’s 8th Annual Spring Mixer to be held at the Brooklyn Brewery – a chance for representatives from local businesses to let their hair down.
The spring mixer is the brainchild of Leah Archibald, the Executive Director of EWVIDCO who first organized the event in 2007.
“It is just a way for businesses to get together in an informal way and enjoy a beer together,” she said. “It is really gratifying to see how it has grown and how the businesses derive pleasure from getting together this way.”
Archibald said that even though EWVIDCO primarily represents industrial businesses she has seen an increase in the growth of smaller businesses in the last few years. Among the areas in which she identified growth included the artisanal industry, and the nascent food industry in North Brooklyn.
EWVIDCO was created in 1982 by a group of local businessman who were looking to revitalize the East Williamsburg area, and felt that an economic boost would also counter the problems resulting from crime and a lack of sanitation facilities.
Today EWVIDCO oversees the Greenpoint-Williamsburg and North Brooklyn Industrial Business Zones, as well as the North Brooklyn Empire Zone – serving the needs of over 1,000 businesses in North Brooklyn, which in turn employ about 15,000 residents from the neighborhood.
For EWVIDCO and Archibald the success of the event is just an indication of the industry growing from strength to strength.
