Covelli Tapped to Run Outpatient Services for Outreach

BY Tanay Warerkar

Outreach, which helps people struggling with substance abuse, announced a new director for outpatient services this week.

Beth Covelli will lead Outreach’s New York City outpatient operations, at its treatment centers on Manhattan Avenue and in Richmond Hill, Queens. She left her position as the director of outpatient substance abuse services at the Child Center Services to take over her new role.

Covelli brings extensive experience to her position at Outreach. She is the chairperson of the Queens Consortium on Substance Abuse and Alcoholism as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the New York State Association of Substance Abuse Providers.

In her new role, Covelli will monitor adolescent outpatient services, intensive outpatient services for middle school students, programs for women, DWI services and ACS consultations.

The Greenpoint location has dedicated outpatient facilities available to teenagers and adults.

“Outreach has programs for multiple populations under one roof, which is an enormous distinction,” Covelli said. “When addiction afflicts one member of a family, all members are affected. Outreach, recognizing this, has created multiple levels of service, specific to adolescents and their families, as well as for women, women with children and other adults.”

Greenpoint and Williamsburg have one of the highest rates of substance abuse related hospitalizations in the borough of Brooklyn, according to a report released by SUNY Downstate.

Outreach expects Covelli’s work will have a tremendous impact on the work of the organization.

“There are a number of obstacles to getting help for people in New York,” said Neil Sheehan, executive vice president at Outreach. “Beth is familiar with the issues here. She knows that Brooklyn and Queens are incredibly diverse and it is important for treatment providers to understand the impact of culture in treatment.
