North Brooklyn Welcomes King’s Bay Y

BY Jeff Mann

On Tuesday, October 29th, the ribbon was cut (actually a mezuzah was hung) to celebrate the opening of the Kings Bay Y at North Williamsburg.

The Y, an agency of UJA Federation of NY, is a non-sectarian Jewish Community Center (JCC) that has served Sheepshead Bay, Homecrest, Midwood, Marine Park, Manhattan Beach, Bergen Beach and Mill Basin since 1952. Over the past two years, it has expanded, opening annexes in Windsor Terrace and Sheepshead Bay. Its newest facility, the first JCC in North Brooklyn since the Williamsburg Y closed in the late 1960s, is open to all, including the more than 13,000 non-Orthodox Jews that now call Williamsburg and Greenpoint home.

Several programs are already up and running at the Y, including a pre-school for children ages two to five, which offers enrichment activities in Hebrew, Chinese or Russian, Jewish cultural activities and music and art specialists. Afterschool enrichment is available for grades pre-K to third with free pick up from PS 17 and 84. Activities include art, cooking, music, dance, drama and science. Individual homework assistance is also available. For the older kids (ages five to nine), there’s “JCamp,” Jewish afterschool where children learn holidays, values, folklore and core Hebrew words through drama, movement, art, games and music.

In addition to preschool and afterschool, the Y offers free activities for babies and toddlers on site and in local libraries. J Yum and Hum (Newborns to Toddlers / 10AM Fridays) features Jewish music, stories and cuisine from around the world. Mini Kickers Indoor Soccer introduces kids to the sport (Ages 2-3 /Sundays 10:00AM; Ages 3-4 / Sundays 11) and “PJ Potluck at Your Place or Ours,” (newborn to five years) invites families to get a taste of the Jewish holidays, music and food.

Family holiday programming is also a big success at the new Y. A music- and food-filled “Rosh Hashanah Experience” attracted 140 families. Spaces for the Y’s Sukkot events filled up immediately, with a waiting list. On Tuesday, December 3rd, the Kings Bay Y will host “Chanukah Family Experience,” with a sing along, arts & crafts, storytelling as well as latkes and donut eating contests. The event takes place at the King and Grove Hotel Rooftop Lounge (160 North 12th Street) from 6:00 to 8:00PM. Admission is free.
