On October 7th, Catherine “Kay” Balletta and Joe San Pietro marked 63 years since saying their ‘I dos’ at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in 1950. Reverend Father Pecchio performed the ceremony, the Late Patrick Bonomo (a future Justice of the Kings County Supreme Court) was Best Man and Frances Patterson nee Balletta, the bride’s sister, was the Maid of Honor.
Later, the newlyweds headed to Our Lady of Snow Hall at 410 Graham Avenue to become the first couple to celebrate their nuptials in the hall, which opened in July of that year.
Mr. San Pietro is a past president of St. Mary of the Snow Society as well as its most senior member, having entered in 1942. He had been a member of the Junior Society since 1938, for a combined membership of 75 years. He also served as Commander of American Legion Post 1336 from 1974 through 1976.
Mr. San Pietro entered the U.S. Army in 1942, served in Okinawa and Korea and was honorably discharged in 1946. He also served in the New York City Police Department and for nineteen years was assigned to the New York County District Attorney’s office. He was the arresting ofﬁcer of Mafia boss Joseph Colombo.
Mrs. San Pietro, a homemaker, raised the family’s two children. They also have five grandchildren.
