Community is central to PS 196. The Ten Eyck School is devoted to academic excellence and creativity, and all its members ensure that every student can reach their full potential.
Dedicated teachers, many of whom live in Williamsburg, provide a well-rounded curriculum to kids from Pre-Kindergarten (newly added for the 2013-2014 year) to fifth grade and Special Education. A wealth of enrichment clubs are offered during the day including guitar, chess, cooking, knitting, sports, technology and Student Council. Moreover, the Bushwick Avenue school works with a host of organizations to create as many learning opportunities as possible.
NY Cares helps the school provide Saturday Homework Help as well as ESL and GED classes for parents. Hosh Yoga teaches yoga, and musician Paulie Z of The Rock Asylum Foundation gives classes in video production and songwriting. (Mark your calendar! Their fifth grade “Fractions” music video debuts on June 11th, and there’s a Rock Asylum Concert for PS 196 and PS 119 on the 13th.)
The school also enjoys close partnerships with the NYC Police Department (SPECDA), Woodhull Hospital, the BEACON family support program and the YMCA. Children’s clothing retailer Aeropostale built the kids a state-of-the-art “Block Room” last year in honor of Maureen Sulecki, the school’s kindergarten teacher and a Greenpoint native, who passed away in October.
Families and neighbors are invited to attend fun and inspiring events throughout the school year. Parents and students celebrate the 100th Day of School each February. The PS 196 Annual Talent Show takes place on June 14th; budding artists display their work at the Spring Art Festival (June 17th-18th); and on Career Day (June 12th) more than 100 professionals of all trades show the children that anything is possible after graduation.
