Not many children want to study math, reading, and writing during the summer months. But parents know that children must continue to exercise their minds, or suffer “summer learning loss.” Fortunately, programs like Eye Level make learning core subjects fun and interesting.
Josh Gunsberger of Play Greenpoint runs Eye Level’s North Brooklyn program. (Eye Level has locations all over the United States.) Eye Level Greenpoint is located in the same building as PLAY Greenpoint, and the two programs work in conjunction. Once children outgrow PLAY Greenpoint’s play space and classes, they can “graduate” into Eye Level’s academic classes.
Eye Level is a math, reading, and writing program that runs during the summer, both as a camp and as an enrichment program that students take part in all year round. At Eye Level, young children work on fine motor skill development, basic math skills, and phonics-based English. Older children work on more advanced projects depending on their skill level.
Sessions are from 9-12pm or 1-4pm. The classes are designed so that children are able to retain and expand on knowledge they learned during school. “We’re trying to prevent brain drain,” explained Gunsberger. “The classes are fun and interactive; it’s not just them sitting for three hours. There are a lot of games involved, but at the same time, we’re developing their critical thinking skills.”
Kids get play multiplication bingo and other games that make learning math interesting. “The classes are also individualized. The kids have a lot of fun, and they’re learning at the same time,” Gunsberger said. He added that their math program is Korean-based, so it’s aligned with the common core standards. “It’s all about building a solid foundation,” explained Gunsberger.
In Eye Level Math, students concentrate on:
Basic Thinking Math: numbers, arithmetic, equations, relationships and functions.
