Go Green! Greenpoint! to Return This Weekend

BY Jeff Mann

The neighborhood’s annual celebration of the environment returns this weekend as Town Square hosts its sixth annual Go Green! Greenpoint!

Performances, art projects, science exhibits, educational displays, enviro-friendly merchandise, health & wellness tips and kids’ activities will highlight the Saturday, May 11th event. Organizers say it will bring the community together to learn and have fun, as well as to celebrate and build a sustainable environment for a clean future.

Some of this year’s highlights will be a free tree giveaway offered by the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) in partnership with Town Square and Greenpoint Waterfront Association for Parks and Planning (GWAPP). 100 trees, including the fruit variety, are available and an NYRP representative will be on site to explain how to plant and care for them.

Participants can help recycle at a Greencycle Swap. Festival attendees can drop off and/or take items such as clothes, shoes, toys, books, bicycles, electronics and computers. Remaining items will be donated to Green Chip and the Vietnam Vets of America.

The second annual Riverkeeper Sweep, a day of service to clean up the shores along the Hudson River, will have its headquarters at Go Green! Greenpoint! This year, Riverkeeper has teamed with recycling pioneer TerraCycle to recycle cigarette butts into industrial products such as pallets or railroad ties. Additional waste, such as chip bags and candy wrappers, will be recycled as well.

Science and art will intersect at the first Brooklyn Science & Art Museum’s Pop-Up Exhibit. A focal point will be a large work of art, made from oobleck – a non-Newtonian fluid upon which a person can walk across, almost like walking on water. The work will be exhibited in a not yet determined neighborhood location after Saturday’s event.

Nearly 100 exhibitors will be on hand at Go Green! from local schools and businesses to borough-wide organizations like the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and Barclays Center to city and state-wide bodies such as the New York Power Authority, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Department of Sanitation’s Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling.

Go Green! Greenpoint! partners include ExxonMobil, the Williamsburg Movement & Arts Center (WMAAC), the Greenpoint Y, Gym Park, Allocco Recycling, GWAPP, Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG), Riverkeeper, North Brooklyn Museum of Art & Science, Greenpoint/Williamsburg Youth Soccer League, Brooklyn Boy Scout Pack 26 and Greenpoint’s brand new Cub Scout Pack 7.

Volunteers are still needed for Go Green! Please contact to sign up.
