Two neighborhood moms known for their kid-friendly organizations are combining their expertise for next week’s first annual Brooklyn BabyFEST.
Jessica Glorieux, of parenting website Motherburg and Susan Anderson of community group Town Square will bring more than 100 exhibitors, speakers and demos to JHS 126 (424 Leonard Street) on Saturday, April 27th, to give advice on everything from prenatal care to registering for pre-school. Financial advisers will be on hand to assist with home buying and college savings plans, as will experts in introducing kids to pets, raising twins and traveling with children. Dads and soon-to-be dads can also get in on the BabyFEST action, with several seminars and demos planned specifically for them.
National and local exhibitors will man booths featuring everything baby, including apparel, strollers, carriers, breastfeeding equipment, educational toys and virtually anything else a parent could think of. An “information booth” will be shared by small, solo practitioners, such as pediatricians, OB-Gyns and nannies.
“I really wanted a BabyFEST that would be informative for parents,” Glorieux explained. “For $15 admission, [attendees] get advice from practitioners, most of whose consulting fees are $25-$50 or more.” Organizing all these products and services in one place, she continued, allows parents to “personalize their questions and to find things they wouldn’t know to search for.”
According to Anderson, the purpose of such a large number of presenters is “to create an atmosphere where parents can get information without being told ‘this is how you do things.’ We want to give them the opportunity to decide what’s right and wrong for their kids.”
In the days leading up to the event, there will be a “countdown raffle,” with a new winner chosen each day, beginning Saturday, April 20th. More prizes will be awarded at BabyFEST, with special prizes for VIP ticket holders ($40 / $60 at the door). In total, thousands of dollars of goods and services will be raffled off, donated by companies such as Little Duck Organics, Carpingo, Smoochie Baby, East River Ferry, the Bump, the Greenpoint Y and dozens more. A limited edition stroller will be given away by Baby R’oues and Ikea will raffle off the entire nursery they will have on display April 27th. Only BabyFEST ticketholders are eligible for the raffles. Tickets are available on the event website: http://brooklynbabyfest.com/.
“North Brooklyn is undergoing this explosion of young parents,” Anderson proclaimed. “My hope is that by bringing families together at BabyFEST it will lead to play dates, and to the village that will be a major part in raising our children.”
