Around 500 state officials and their staff members got a taste of our borough at the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s annual Brooklyn Night. Legislators at the March 4th event, a highlight of the Chamber’s yearly legislative trip, chowed down on Nathan’s hot dogs, Utz chips, Ikea meatballs (featuring a few too many horsemeat references) along with other hometown staples and washed them down with egg creams and, of course, Brooklyn beer.
The two-hour event also gave many legislators the opportunity to meet and congratulate Chamber President and CEO Carlo Scissura, who along with (first female and Latina) Chairperson Denise Arbesu have raised the organization’s profile to new heights. In addition, many of the borough’s businesses were highlighted and Brooklyn’s Assembly and Senate delegations were honored for supporting the Chamber and its commitment to economic development.
“There’s nothing like the best of Brooklyn food to get all of you here,” Scissura told the crowd. “This is truly a celebration of Brooklyn food, the borough’s growing manufacturing sector and the many jobs these businesses have created for the borough.”
Legislative speakers included Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Assemblyman Joe Lentol who performed an impromptu acapella version of doo wop standard “Gloria.” Chris Woehrle of Kings County Jerky represented the borough’s growing small foods manufacturers.
“We all know that the food of Brooklyn is the best in the country,” said Lentol. “But unfortunately, some of my upstate colleagues do not have the pleasure of regularly enjoying it. It gives the entire Brooklyn Assembly Delegation the chance to show off one of the fastest manufacturing sectors in New York and the Nation – the food movement. It’s big, it’s happening in Brooklyn and it’s only going to grow jobs over the next decade. Thanks to the Brooklyn Chamber for bringing out all the stops and, as always, it’s a great day when something from Brooklyn makes its way to Albany.”
Mark your calendars! Brooklyn Night 2014 returns to Albany on March 3, 2014.
