On January 30th, the impending storm could not keep supporters away from the Greenpoint Y’s kickoff of their 2013 Strong Kids Campaign. The Y’s only fundraiser, Strong Kids ensures that no child or family is turned away from life-enhancing YMCA programs because of the inability to pay.
As more and more guests arrived the anticipation was building. When the doors finally opened for the official kickoff at 7PM, the darkness gave way to flashing lights everywhere.
Guests dined and gathered to hear Executive Director Keith Hicks, once again proclaim the start of the Strong kids Campaign. With an ambitious goal of $160,000, the Greenpoint Y community is determined to step up to the challenge.
Guests got in their daily exercise to a Zumba warm-up. Major gift co-chair, Roseanne Antonucci and board member, Michael Kawochka showed everyone what donations of $25 to $2,500 can do for the kids and families of the Greenpoint and Williamsburg community.
One Y scholar teen, Arielle Faulk, spoke about the positive impact of the Y on her life, and an Out of School Time (OST) mom, Valerie Litz, whose child attends the OST afterschool program at McCarren Play Center shared her testimony about the importance of the Y program for her and her family.
During his speech, Assemblyman Joseph Lentol showed his support by committing as much as $5,000 to the Y this year.
There were 2 amazing performances, one by 4 young musicians from the Greenpoint Y afterschool enrichment program, who played the guitar under the guidance of their teacher, Gabriel Bendana, and the other, an incredible capoiera performance by Y instructor, Christina Dodd and fellow capoierist, Mirlet Auguste.
Having an annual fundraising event like the Strong Kids Campaign helps the Y fulfill their commitment to the Greenpoint and Williamsburg community, and provides to the kids and families that live here. Every dollar collected stays in these two communities.
Local sponsors were L.A. Pizza, O.N.E. Coconut Water, and Brooklyn Cupcakes. Food was provided by Red Star.
