The “28th Annual National Night Out” (NNO), a crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), took place on Tuesday, August 2nd. Last year, over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide participated in National Night Out as did 37 million people, overall.
NNO is designed to:
•Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
•Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
•Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
•Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Greenpoint’s NNO featured a block party sponsored by the 94th Precinct Community Council on Lorimer Street, which included food, rides and music. Information about crime prevention was distributed by neighborhood groups and of course the officers themselves. In addition to taking the opportunity to meet and greet our police officers, many in attendance, including our elected officials, were pleased to congratulate the officers on the quick arrest of the shooter in the well-publicized jewelry store robbery on Nassau Avenue last week.
