Bodybuilders Unite at Grand Street Campus
When one thinks of the diverse and bountiful borough of Brooklyn, heavy-duty bodybuilding doesn’t immediately come to mind. However, on Saturday, Manhattan Avenue’s own Natural Vitamins, in collaboration with John Rivera, former owner of the now-defunct Exodus Gym in Williamsburg, kicked off the 8th annual National Physique Committee Grand Prix, the only Brooklyn-based bodybuilding showcase. The Grand Prix, which is held at the Grand Street Campus, features roughly 60 amateur bodybuilders competing in a variety of weight classes and categories. The event boasts an array of sponsors that span the spectrum of the industry, from magazines to food products.
“When we first started the show it was so successful. It was a really big show—we had so many of the celebrity bodybuilders come out,” Rivera said. “The point of the show is to recognize the fitness industry and bodybuilding in Brooklyn. There is a lot going on and the bodybuilding community is growing, especially in Williamsburg. When I started the gym it was wonderful—the Borough President even gave me a proclamation!”
