On Thursday, July 31st, 2008, some of Greenpoint and Williamsburg’s most prominent business and civic leaders gathered to support the Greenpoint YMCA’s Summer Day Camp participants as they performed in an annual event that has become one of the most fun and festive celebrations of the year, Camp Spirit Day. Among those who served on the panel of guest-judges for the event were, Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, Elaine and Norm Brodsky, Carolina Asirifi and several representatives from the Greenpoint YMCA’s Board of Manager, including Frank P. Carbone, Rachel Amar, Darryl Holon, Dr. Susan Hudec, Stuart Leffler and Christina Pullo. Parents, family members and supporters filled the gym as over 100 of our neighborhood youth displayed hand-crafted banners and performed original routines celebrating the spirit of the Y and the Y’s four core values, honesty, caring, respect and responsibility.
The Greenpoint YCMA’s Senior Director of Youth & Family Programs, Tammea Tyler, recently commented on the Summer Day Camp Program. “During the summer, not only does the Greenpoint YMCA support the social and emotional growth of your child, but we also help bridge the academic gap between the end and start of the school year. During the summer, children often lose valuable academic skills learned at school. At the Y, we are helping kids retain those skills. Our trained staff incorporates fun literacy and math activities into camp, including problem solving, journal writing, story and poetry writing and read-alouds. This year, students in one of our camps participated in a literacy study of Shakespeare that engaged them in learning, writing and acting out sonnets! Students of all ages have fun in our program and don’t even realize they are learning as well.”
$13,000 was allocated to provide financial assistance to Camp Participants this year. Approximately 400 young people have taken part in this year’s program. In all, approximately 80% of the young people who participate in the Greenpoint YMCA’s programs attend for free or with financial assistance. More than 50 community volunteers and more than 400 individual, local business and corporate donors make this level of support possible through contributions to the annual Strong Kids Campaign.
Day Camp participants have fun while developing new skills, making new friends, building self-confidence and learning core values. Camp Activities include swimming, field trips, interactive guest performances and more! Greenpoint YMCA Summer Day Camps are licensed by the New York Department of Health and accredited by the American Camping Association.
