The Great Man by Kate Christensen:
Kate Christensen is the real deal. Not only is she an award-winning author (she just received the 2008 Pen/Faulkner Award) as well as a Greenpointer (much of the book takes place right here in our own neighborhood), but the characters in this book feel so real that I actually started thinking I would see them in the flesh, shopping in my bookstore.
Don’t let the cover fool you, this book is not about the young and glamorous. The characters are mainly three women in their late seventies who are vibrant, smart and sexy, and they all have something to say about the “great man” in their lives, a famous artist who has died and now has not one, but two biographers fighting for the story of his life. Two of the women are his wife and long-time mistress, and the third is his less-famous and somewhat bitter artist sister. The references to Greenpoint, the art world, and the sensuous pleasures of food combine to make this a must-read.
